“A few years ago I took up the hobby of photography. It wasn’t long before I began happily sharing my photos with friends and family.

Photography brings me such joy (my way of of kissing the world!), and I love sharing that joy with others.

I decided that a Photo Blog might be a fun way to share with more folks and an opportunity to share how I experience life. I see myself as a witness to Life.
Someone once told me that I have the role of “sacred witness”. That resonates with me, thus the title of this photoblog. Seeing Life, being present with Life, is a sacred act. Photography is one way I “see”, one way I practice being present.

It is my hope that in sharing my photos with you, you will feel the invitation to be present in your life and will be inspired to become a witness to Life. We live in tumultuous times. Perhaps in taking the time to truly listen, see, and be present, we will bring a little healing to ourselves, those around us, and to the world at large.”

ABOUT ME

“My name is Carla Royal, and I am 49 years old. As I approach the half century mark, I have been deeply reflecting on my life, especially in light of the tumultuous times in which we live. I spent 20 years working as a psychotherapist and only recently decided to let that business wind down. My primary work is changing/evolving. To what? I don’t know, but I am clear that my role as sacred witness is a key part of this evolution, and key in extending some healing to the world.

I have also become a caretaker. It’s one way I’ve chosen to simplify my life. My partner and I have a full-time caretaker position on a beautiful farm in NE PA. We lovingly care for the land, home, and farm animals. It is wonderful, simple, and satisfying work. Currently, we are looking for a caretaker job back in the south as we feel the desire to be closer to family.

Recent years have been quite the adventure. More and more, I am learning about relaxing into the groundlessness of life. Pema Chodron has called it Comfortable with Uncertainty. My adventures seem to be leading me down the road of learning to accept impermanence, embrace it, and thrive, even in the midst of troubled times. Photography is one way I support this practice.”

Shop around further afield than Amazon, and the prices are so similar that they are practically identically priced. Which is a curious and interesting situation. The question, then, is as follows: You will buy one of them, but which one would you choose?

Comparing the specs

When you compare the specifications side by side (made a lot easier by using dpreview’s fantastic side-by-side comparison tool of the two cameras), there ain’t much between them. The 50D is slightly faster, the 550D has a slightly better screen and higher resolution.

Some would argue that the 550D makes more sense because I have the memory cards already (HD/SD), but the 550D generates massive files, and I probably have to buy new, bigger memory cards anyway, so that point is moot.

In favour of the 550D

A very tasty camera indeed.

The 550D has a full-HD movie mode, which isn’t something I generally look for in a stills camera, but I have seen some beautiful results, and I’m tempted to give it a go.

The 50D doesn’t have particularly good high-ISO results in some tests, which is a downer, while the 550D appears to have inherited the absolutely epic low-light skills from the 7D camera.

Resolution means nothing, and the difference between 15 or 18 megapixels is practically non-existent. Having said that, having a little bit higher resolution can’t harm, but the key thing is that imaging chips in general are slowly getting better – seeing what the 7D has been able to do with a ‘very similar’ imaging chip, I’m leaning towards the 550D based on its innards

In favour of the 50D

A very tasty camera indeed.

I’ve owned many cameras in the xxD series in the past – the 60D, 10D, 20D, 30D, and 40D have all been in my possession at some point, and I trust Canon to do a good job on it. They’re a lot more solidly built than the xxxD series, so that’s a huge advantage if you mistreat your camera (which I generally don’t).

The 50D is also faster in general: It starts faster, it takes photos in continuous mode faster, etc.

It’s an interesting (and fiercely difficult) choice to have to make; choosing between these two, very similar-yet-different cameras. I know which one I am leaning towards, but I’m very curious to hear what you would choose – and why. Vote above, comment below, make it good!

Pentax announced the launch of the smc Pentax-D FA 645 55mm F2.8 AL[IF] SDM AW versatile standard lens to meet the requirements for high resolution photography. Thanks to its features, it can accompany medium-format digital SLR cameras.

When mounted on the PENTAX 645D camera body, it offers a focal length of 43.5mm (in the 35mm format), thus producing an angle of view close to that of the human eye. That’s why it will suit various subjects and applications ranging from landscapes to portraits.
