I learned this the first time I was asked to photograph a wedding for one of my friends. To say that I was nervous would be an understatement (I’m sure I didn’t sleep for days before the wedding). I’d never done anything like that before and to be the ‘official’ photographer was scary.

In the lead up to the day I decided to buy five extra rolls of film (yes this is back in the 90s before I discovered digital) to have in my case just in case something went wrong.

On the day of the wedding, in my anxious state, I ended up using all of the film that I’d wanted to use PLUS the five extra rolls. over the day I’d shot close to 600 images!

I was kicking myself for going so snap happy in the days after the wedding because I had to cover the extra cost of the film and processing due to my own mistake but ended up being really happy with the results because when you shoot 600 shots in a few hours you’re bound to get some good ones (and I did – quite a few in fact). the couple was really impressed with the variety of shots that I’d taken.

In the many weddings that I shot after this time I never shot that many images again – but I did learn the lesson of taking a few more shots than was necessary.

The beauty of Digital Cameras is that if you take this approach you don’t end up with a bill at the end of the day! Digital cameras allow you to take as many shots as your memory card will hold and to delete any shots that are obviously of a poor quality as you go.

Of course taking this approach doesn’t mean you don’t need to frame your shots well or use the other techniques that I talk about on this site. It also doesn’t mean you need to end up with loads of shots that all look exactly the same as each other.

in the next post I’ll run through 10 ways to shoot more without just taking the same shot over and over again.

Photo-editing can be an arduous task especially if you are a beginner and have little idea of what to do and how to do it, even on a “straight-forward” photo-editing software like Lightroom.

Design & Print from Avanquest is limited desktop publishing software  that allows you to create a handful of different projects, such as brochures, letterhead, newsletters, post cards, greeting cards, labels and envelopes, but it sports a large library of templates, fonts, photos and images, graphic typestyles and complete sets. One would question the quality of their photos and images however. they are alright, but they could a little polishing to get up to the level of professional grade material. Users who are using this program for projects at home would product decent pieces with this utility. the finished products from this program could stand to be a little more impressive though.

Projects:Design & Print says they allow you to create envelopes, greeting cards, newsletters, brochures, labels, postcards and letterhead on their website.  they also include the phrase “and more” onto the end of that sentence.  Their “more” consists of business cards and flyers.  beyond these nine options, they literally have nothing else in terms of projects you can create.  What they do have is substantial, but it could use some definite improvement.  Having more options for projects users can create gives your program a little more staying power.  if the user wanted to create something that wasn’t on this list, they would have to go elsewhere.

Ease of Use:Design & Print is easy to install and use, though its templates and tools for creating projects need some work. none of the templates come with pre-written text and the images are all clipart. we would like to see the templates attached to this program become a little more polished and aesthetically pleasing.

Photo/Graphic Tools:Design & Print comes with a few thousand clipart images and backgrounds; the additional advertised millions of photos and images are available through a third-party supplier, and even then you only have one month of free access and need to manually download the images.

When you’re working with photos, the only tools Design & Print includes are the ability to adjust the brightness and color, rotate an image (this doesn’t work as well as higher-ranked products) and invert, emboss or blur an image.

Text Tools:Other than inserting some decorative headings and creating your own headings by applying color, different fonts, shadows and shapes, you can’t really do much in Design & Print with the body text like you can with other desktop publishing programs.

Printing/Sharing:the basic printing and sharing features included in Design & Print Business Edition include setting a print alignment and sending your document to an email recipient.

Help/Support:Accessing help and support with Design & Print can be frustrating. Phone support doesn’t come cheap: $24.95 for the first ten minutes and $2.95 for each additional minute. if you happen to be placed on hold during this process, it can get expensive.

We also had difficulty finding an email contact for support.

Summary:Overall, we were disappointed with Design & Print. we were hoping for a better selection of professional templates which we could simply edit the text and photos.

No matter where I placed the light, she walked right up to it like a moth. She wouldn’t sit still and just wasn’t in to the whole being-told-what-to-do process.

I almost didn’t share these, but I got a chuckle over our interaction as I was trying to sneak up on her with a big camera and a giant light stand with a great big white umbrella attached to it.  I don’t know why she didn’t want any part of it. haha…

Here’s how the attempt went down:

“Whatchu do-een, Mommy?”

“Nothing, honey. Can you sit still for me?”

“I don’ like the light, Mommy. I go now.”

“Please, can I take a few more?”

Try to imaging me snapping several more of her, moving the light around her. She keeps flopping down, wanting no part of it.  Then, this happens…

She looks like she is about ready to come at me like a spider monkey.

“Stopppp, Mommy.”

The teeth-clenching sealed it.  I shut it down, thanked her for her time, then promptly swept her inside to distract her with a cookie before she completely refused to work with me again.
